NEET PG 2024 Supreme Court Hearing Postponed to September 30

NEET PG 2024 Supreme Court Hearing Postponed to September 30: Transparency and Last-Minute Exam Changes Under Scrutiny

The Supreme Court of India has deferred the highly anticipated hearing on the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2024 petitions to Monday, September 30, 2024. The case, which addresses key grievances raised by medical aspirants, focuses on last-minute changes made to the NEET PG 2024 exam pattern by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) and the lack of transparency in the examination process.

Petition Calls for Transparency

The petition was filed by a group of NEET PG 2024 aspirants who are challenging NBEMS for withholding crucial documents, including question papers, answer keys, and individual response sheets of students who appeared for the examination. The NEET PG 2024 results were announced on August 23, 2024, but candidates claim that the opaque evaluation process prevents them from verifying their scores and fully understanding the marking scheme used.Petitioners are demanding that NBEMS release these documents in order to ensure transparency and fairness. Without access to question papers and answer keys, candidates argue that they are unable to assess the accuracy of their results or challenge discrepancies. The petitioners’ counsel stressed that the withholding of these materials casts doubt on the integrity of the examination process and undermines the confidence of students

Another significant issue raised in the petition relates to last-minute changes made by NBEMS to the NEET PG 2024 exam pattern. According to the petitioners, these changes were introduced just three days before the exam, a move which they argue left candidates underprepared and increased stress levels. During a previous hearing on September 20, 2024, the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, expressed dissatisfaction with the timing of these alterations.

"It is not fair to expect students to adjust to a new pattern with only days to prepare. Such decisions put unnecessary mental pressure on already stressed candidates," the CJI noted during the proceedings.

The Supreme Court has since issued a notice to NBEMS, directing them to submit a detailed explanation regarding the rationale behind these last-minute changes.

Awaited Response from NBEMS

NBEMS has been given one week to respond to the Supreme Court’s notice. The board is expected to clarify the reasons for making sudden changes to the exam pattern so close to the examination date. Additionally, they must address the concerns raised by petitioners regarding the lack of access to question papers and answer keys. A final decision on the matter is expected following the hearing on September 30, 2024, where NBEMS will present its defense. The case has garnered widespread attention, as it directly affects thousands of medical aspirants across India who have been eagerly waiting for clarity on the examination process.

While the legal battle over the NEET PG exam continues, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has proceeded with the NEET PG 2024 counselling registration process, which commenced on September 20, 2024. Students who successfully cleared the NEET PG exam are now eligible to register for the counselling process through the official website of the MCC, mcc.nic.in.

However, the complete counselling schedule, including the details of all three rounds of counselling, is yet to be released by the officials. Candidates are advised to keep a close watch on updates from the MCC for further information regarding seat allotment and admission procedures.

With the Supreme Court hearing rescheduled to September 30, 2024, aspirants and stakeholders across the medical fraternity await the outcome. The petition highlights two major concerns—the lack of transparency in the marking scheme and the abrupt changes to the exam pattern.
