NEET PG exam centers reassigned for TN Candidates

NEET PG Examination Centres Reallotted for TN candidates

Chennai: The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) began the reallocation of NEET PG examination centers on Sunday following widespread discontent among candidates and interventions from several parliamentarians, including R Sachithanantham from Tamil Nadu and Shashi Tharoor from Kerala. The MPs addressed concerns to Union Minister JP Nadda, emphasizing the hardships faced by candidates due to the initial allocation of distant exam centers.

Numerous candidates from Tamil Nadu, who had initially been assigned centers in neighboring Andhra Pradesh, have now received reassignments to centers within their home state. This decision comes after considerable backlash from the medical community and advocacy by political representatives, who highlighted the logistical and financial challenges faced by candidates.

For instance, Dr. M Senthil from Tiruchy and Dr. M Valavan from Ariyalur, who were originally assigned to Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, have now been reassigned to more accessible locations in Karur and Tiruchy, respectively. Many female doctors, previously scheduled to appear at exam centers located in remote parts of Andhra Pradesh, have also been reassigned to centers within Tamil Nadu.

Cancellation and Reduction of Centers:
The controversy began on June 23 when NBEMS unexpectedly canceled the NEET PG 2024 examination just hours before it was due to commence. This sudden decision resulted in significant monetary losses for candidates who had already traveled to their assigned centers, often located outside their state of residence. Additionally, NBEMS reduced the number of examination centers nationwide from 259 to 185, exacerbating the situation for many aspirants.

In Tamil Nadu alone, the number of exam centers has been cut from 31 to just 17. This reduction disproportionately affected candidates with medical conditions and pregnant women, who expressed their inability to undertake long-distance travel to distant centers. Moreover, many candidates reported being assigned to centers outside the four preferences they had selected during registration, further fueling dissatisfaction and concern.

NBEMS Responds to Concerns:
In response to the widespread criticism and representations received from candidates, NBEMS initiated the reallocation process to better accommodate aspirants. In an email communication sent to candidates, NBEMS stated:

“On receipt of representations, the NBEMS has formed more centers to accommodate the maximum possible candidates within the states of their correspondence address.”

The board's move to reassess and reallocate exam centers has been welcomed by candidates and stakeholders alike, as it alleviates some of the logistical challenges and financial burdens initially faced by examinees.
