Amid controversy over inflated marks resulting in 67 candidates securing the top rank in the NEET 2024 entrance exam, the National Testing Agency (NTA) explained on Thursday that this was due to revisions in the answer key and compensatory marks awarded for lost time. In a Thursday statement, the NTA attributed the higher scores to changes in NCERT textbooks and grace marks given for time lost at examination centers. "In the case of the 67 candidates achieving perfect scores of 720/720, the NTA clarified that 44 of them benefitted from a revised answer key in Physics, while six received compensatory marks due to time loss," stated the NTA, addressing concerns about the shared rank among these students in the NEET 2024 exam.

The NTA, in response to allegations, refuted claims that six top scorers hailed from the same Haryana center, emphasizing that these top achievers represent diverse geographical locations across the nation. This clarification arrives amidst concerns regarding irregularities and score inflation in the NEET 2024 exam, which took place on May 5 across 4,750 centers in 571 cities, including 14 abroad.

Previously, on platform X, an aspirant voiced suspicions, stating, "The revelation of 67 students securing a perfect 720 out of 720 marks post NEET 2024 exam's leak raises serious doubts. This jeopardizes the aspirations of countless candidates nationwide, sparking frustration among students. A thorough investigation by the government is imperative."

NTA Clarification:-

In its comprehensive reply to inquiries, the NTA elaborated that the elevation in both cut-off marks and the count of top achievers in NEET 2024 underscored the exam's competitive essence, affirming the preservation of its integrity. "A senior NTA official stated in the announcement that the raised cutoff mirrors the exam's competitive essence and the heightened performance benchmarks reached by candidates this year." "The participation of candidates rose from 20,38,596 in 2023 to 23,33,297 in 2024," stated the NTA, highlighting the increment in candidates, which naturally resulted in a rise in high achievers owing to a broader candidate base.

Regarding the grace marks allotted to certain students, the NTA explained that NEET 2024 lodged petitions in various high courts, expressing concerns about time loss during the examination at certain centers.

"The issues raised by candidates via writ petitions and representations regarding the time loss during the exam were addressed, resulting in compensation for 1,563 candidates," the official mentioned, noting that the revised marks of these candidates ranged from -20 to 720 marks. Additionally, two candidates received scores of 718 and 719, respectively in NEET 2024 examination, due to compensatory marks. On May 5, the NTA stated that the issuance of incorrect question papers at an examination center in Rajasthan resulted in some candidates taking the papers out of the center. The agency refuted any suggestion of a question paper leak.

The following day, the NTA restated that assertions of a question paper leak in the NEET-UG medical entrance exam for NEET 2024 are "entirely unfounded and lacking evidence," affirming that every question paper has been properly managed.examinations. NTA has filed cases against impostors, with some cases handled by state law enforcement. The agency has also cooperated with all requests related to investigating NEET UG 2024 exam incidents.
