UPSC Mains 2024 Exam Pattern

The UPSC Mains examination comprises 9 papers, consisting of both compulsory and optional subjects. This stage evaluates the candidate’s in-depth understanding, articulation, and analytical abilities. It includes language papers, essays, general studies, and optional subjects.

The exam consists of two qualifying papers: the Compulsory Indian Language Paper and the English Language Paper, with a duration of 3 hours and a total of 300 marks each. However, their scores are not included in the final merit.

The remaining 7 papers, in addition to the interview, play a significant role in determining the final merit. These papers include an Essay, four General Studies papers, and two Optional Subject papers, accounting for a total of 1750 marks. Furthermore, an additional 275 marks are allotted for the interview, making the total mark of 2025.

Aspirants need to note that there is no negative marking in the UPSC Mains exam. This is because it is a subjective paper, and the assessment is based on the quality of the descriptive answers provided.

UPSE CSE INTERVIEW Process

The UPSC Interview or Personality Test is the final stage of the evaluation process for aspirants seeking to join the civil services. During this stage, a panel of experts carefully assesses the overall personality of the candidates. The traits evaluated include mental alertness, clear exposition, judgment, social cohesion, leadership, and integrity. It's important to note that about twice the number of vacancies are shortlisted for this crucial interview.

The interview typically lasts for 20-30 minutes and is conducted by a panel of experts comprising bureaucrats and subject-matter specialists. The objective of this stage is to judge the candidate’s suitability for the diverse and demanding responsibilities associated with civil services.

It's worth mentioning that these interviews take place at the UPSC office in New Delhi. The structured interview process places significant emphasis on determining the candidate's fitness for the dynamic and challenging roles in civil services. The aim is to ensure a comprehensive assessment that goes beyond the performance in the written exams.
